New Civ 4 Expansion is a Sequel to an Old Classic
Posted  Tue 10 Jun, 2008 18:16 By Augustus
News
New Expansion Announced for Civ 4
Remake of Colonization to Take the Game to the New World

A long-awaited remake of Colonization, the classic Sid Meier game set around the New World from 1492 to the War for Independence, has been announced by Firaxis as an expansion for Civ 4. Unlike previous expansions, however, this one is a stand-alone product that will not require the original game to play.

"We've received many requests from fans over the years to bring back Colonization and now seemed to be the perfect time to do that," said Sid Meier, director of creative development at Firaxis Games. "The Civilization IV engine provided a fantastic foundation for a new Colonization experience and allowed us to create something great for both new players and long time fans of the game."

This is an excellent development for the Civilization community. Three cheers to Firaxis and Take-Two for finally doing this!

The Civvie Awards 07/08 - Nomination Details
Posted  Thu 27 Mar, 2008 20:21 By Catharsis
News
Welcome to the Civvies nomination stage! At this point in the proceedings, it's up to you - the great unwashed CivUnited public - to nominate posters you feel deserving of these 'prestigious' awards. There will be a list of awards later, but first, here are some rules:

1. Do not post your nominations in this thread, or anywhere on CU (or CFC or Apolyton or FishFetish dot com or anywhere else). PM them to me, either on CU or CFC.

2. You may only make one nomination for each award.

3. You may only nominate users who are members of CivUnited and have joined before 26 March 2008. Likewise, only members who have joined before that date are allowed to participate in the nomination process (as well as voting). EDIT: Also, you can't nominate yourself, or your own mod.

4. Nonsensical nominations (e.g. nominating me for 'Best Modder') will be discarded.

5. The nomination stage will end on the 30th of March, at 20.00 GMT.

Right, here are the awards you can nominate users for! (There are some others that don't require nomination.)

Best Unit Art
Best Leaderhead Art
Best Scenario
Best Mod for these four, please nominate a specific piece of work, and include the name of the creator in the PM
Best Modder

Civ Player Award
Hearts of Iron Award
Astro Empires Award (these three are all 'Best XXX Player' awards)

Best Spammer
Best Thread has to be a CU or FCF thread, obviously
Best Avatar please nominate the poster and describe the avatar
Most Intelligent Poster
Funniest Poster
Best Poster

Lifetime Achievement Award (for the person who has given the most to the site)

Good luck, and remember: do not post your nominations here!

More Woes for CFC
Posted  Sun 23 Mar, 2008 01:11 By Augustus
News
CFC suffered another round of server problems this week with a two-and-a-half-hour downtime on March 22. Although this latest incident did not involve hackers, it has resulted in the temporary suspension of all download and database activity. Last time, on March 2, the database was similarly interrupted when a hacker succeeding in breaking into the system. All files uploaded after July 2007 were ultimately lost.

For the moment, Telefragged, the hosting service of CFC, has moved the site to a different server. Once the move back is completed, Thunderfall has stated that all download services will be restored to normal.

EA offers to buy Take2

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/25/t...=rssnyt&emc=rss

EA has recently made an offer to buy Take Two, publisher of civ and GTA. EA are just after GTA and it's not hard to imagine civ being put by the wayside or given the EA treatment (civ is too complicated and must be simplified/you defeated an enemy civ. big bonus).

What do you think of this?

CFC Hacked
Posted  Mon 03 Mar, 2008 19:24 By Augustus
News
Yesterday, March 2, 2008 - a date which will live in infamy - the loyal Civvers of CFC were suddenly and deliberately attacked by text and cyber forces of the Empire of the Zarox. The Civilization Fanatics Center was at peace with that nation and, at the solicitation of Thunderfall, was still in conversation with its Government and Emperor looking toward the maintenance of peace...

All downloads, screenshots and uploaded files after July 23, 2007, have been lost. This includes the DB and Easy Upload System files.

This date will live in infamy...

ModCast Episode #1: The Personifica
 Posted  Sun 20 Jan, 2008 07:52 By
News
From Apolyton:

Image

The PolyCast podcast family is expanding with a new show. The flagship show PolyCast is old enough to be a toddler so we figured it's time to give it a little brother, and we're calling it ModCast.

This new show, which will still fall under the greater PolyCast banner and be released bi-weekly in an alternating schedule with PolyCast itself, will be looking at modding of the Civilization series, with a strong focus on Civilization IV. The panelists will be composed of four veteran modders: former PC panelist and Desert War co-creator Wouter "Locutus" Snijders, Second Revolution creator and Road to War artist Tony "GarretSidzaka" Kiehl, MXMLL co-creator and CCCP team leader Kenneth "Impaler[WrG]" Ferland and last but not least Better Ship Scale creator and Age of Decadence artist Oscar "Elhoim" Velzi.

They will discuss everything that's happening in the modding community: news, forum discussions and new releases of artwork, scenarios, Python and SDK mods and more. They'll also spotlight bigger modding projects and interview the people behind them, as well as of course respond to listener feedback, whether through forums, mail or voicemail/VOIP.

Episodes, RSS feeds and contact info can be found on the PolyCast website (with one-click subscription links for iTunes and the like coming soon) and you can discuss the show on our Community forum ...

Decision Time
 Posted  Tue 15 Jan, 2008 04:44 By
News
In the last year we have grown from the smallest site no one had heard of to one of the biggest civilization modding sites on the internet. Now we have come to a crossroads, what do we want to do with the site? Where do we want the site to head towards?

We have 2 simple options, but if you think you have a better one please tell me.

1: We become fully a modding site with no OT and no none civ stuff. This would increase mods, modders and would get more credibility, but this way would lose some members.

2: We stay with OT. This wouldn't lose members, but mods and modders wont be coming in as fast and if the OT continues as it currently has then we will have no credibility.

We would like to welcome our third moderator, Ironman.

We hope him all the best in the future and that not to many posts have to be deleted.

Democracy Game & RPG Interest Thread

After quite a long period of absence, I've decided to come back to try and start a democracy game and possibly an RPG. Since the amount of experienced DemoGame Players is limited here, as well as the amount of people who might show interest, I've decided to set the rules of the game up myself (instead of allowing discussion like the past attempts at a demogame) and I've also made them fairly simple to understand, and not to legally entangling. I have also taken it upon myself to condense those rules, just to make sure that people who do not want to read the whole thing can be satisfied.

So you ask "What is this demogame you speak of?"
A Democracy Game (demogame) is a game of civ, which we play collectively and mimic a government. We play the game by electing officials who have assigned jobs in the game, and we voice our opinions to them. It is a synergy between a representative and direct democracy. Below is the condensed version of the rules, to help you understand. The post below this one will contain the full set of rules.

Please state if you would have int ...

Please state if you would have interest in playing a demogame. As you can see we need about 10 people, although more is definitely welcome.

Condensed Version of Rules

1. The Constitution lays out basic rights and fundamentals of our game.
2. The Code of Laws defines how we play the game.

There are three branches of our government. Judicial, Legislative and Executive.

The Judicial branch is made up of three officials who serve to interpret our laws as well as execute any lawsuits brought against citizens. It is made up by the Chief Justice, the Prosecutor, and the Public Defender.

The Legislative Branch is made up of all citizens (Citizens Assembly), whether they be elected officials or not. It has the power to make all major decisions by a poll called an Initiative (defined in constitution.) It is organized by the Speaker of the Assembly, who can invalidate polls, appoint citiz ...

Official Firaxis Civilization IV Modding Contest
 Posted  Thu 20 Dec, 2007 20:15 By
News
What Does Your Civilization Stand For?

The holidays are upon us and we’re certain many of you are wondering what to do while sitting in the comfort of your homes, staying as far away from the snow and ice as possible (Californians excluded). Sure, you could spend time with family, play with the kids, or figure out how to turn on your squeaky clean new iPod. But, we have a better idea. Why not show the world what you can do to customize the greatest strategy game ever made?

And to give you an even bigger incentive Dell has sent us some brand new XPS machines (four desktops and a laptop to be more specific) and we will give them to the winners of the contest. What we are looking for is simple: we want to see your best work, in any of the following four categories:

  • Best In-Game Asset (art, including units, buildings and/or wonders)
  • Best World-Builder Scenario (just a single .wbs file)
  • Best Map Script (just a single .py file)
  • Best Educational Mod (only educators and schools can submit entries for this one)

The creator of the winning entry in each category will receive a Dell XPS desktop computer to show off to your friends. In addition, the best over-all mod from the submissions above will receive the grand prize of a Dell XPS laptop. Can you say Happy Holidays?

Here are some things to remember. The prizes are awarded to individuals only, so if your mod is a team effort, the prizes will only be awarded to the designated team leader. You can use existing mods that you’ve already created, or you can create something from scratch using Civ IV or any of it’s expansions. Finally, please do not submit mods that are not yours. This not only makes our job harder, but also makes children cry.

The contest begins December 23rd and will run through February 18th, so crack your knuckles and crank out something fabulous. As an aside, this contest is U.S. only, and our lawyers have drafted up a lovely set of rules for you to f ...

There has been a new downloads database installed. This should fix many of the problems of the old downloads database.
Mod authors are advised to move their mods to the new download db. Users can temporarily access the old downloads database at this link:

http://forums.civunited.net/dload.php

Uploads to the old downloads db have been disabled.

Changes to warnings
By tonyf12

The maximum yellow cards before a ban is now 3 instead of 5.

Users who were previously on 5 are now down to 2.

New Modding profile option
By tonyf12

You may have noticed a new thing on people's profiles.
This allows people to select what modding ability they have to make it easier for mod leaders looking for members.
It also shows up on the memberlist.

All existing modders are advised to add this option to prevent confusion as it defaults to none.

civunited.org and civunited.com

We now have the domains http://civunited.org http://civunited.com which lead to the portal. http://forums.civunited.org, http://forums.civunited.com, http://wiki.civunited.com and http://wiki.civunited.org now work.

World of Legends Woes Continue as Great Khan is Canned

The World of Legends modding team has been slowly recovering from the lack of progress that afflicted it last month. New updates were being released and the mod getting one step closer to reality when more bad news was announced. Cybrxkhan, Great Khan and 'pho phanatic' of CivUnited, broke news earlier today that alarmed all faithful modders anxiously awaiting the WoL release: he is unable to run Civilization IV.

The jealous modders who attacked the team leader with viruses last month ...
